Bob
Justus is a likable, well-meaning person for the most part. He is
reported to be a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He is
not known to be a person who lies, cheats, and steals. His written
opinions in the newspaper are without question in concert with the
vast majority of people in our area. And futhermore, Bob without
doubt has many other laudable attributes. However, I would hasten
to add, history and theology are not among them.
Bob assumes that his opinions and beliefs are correct and any divergent
views are obviously wrong. He seems to believe that any faith systems
other than his own are inaccurate.
It is true that the phrase "separation of church and state"
are not found in the U.S. Constitution. These words come from a
letter to the Danbury (Connecticut) Baptist Association written
by Thomas Jefferson expressing his views on the subject. Jefferson
and many of the Founding Fathers were Deists; not Christians.
Bob claims he is worried that "Christ" will be taken from
"Christmas" this year. Historically, in the good ole U.S.
of A., Christmas has never been about Christ. It is about capitalism,
conspicuous consumption, and spending billions of dollars on worthless
junk made in third world country sweat shops to place under Christmas
trees.
According to the New Testament Gospels, Jesus of Nazareth had a
bothersome habit of hanging out with all sorts of unsavory characters
- outcasts, sinners, women of ill repute and others who would never
be welcome in the majority of Christian churches. For that matter,
neither would Jesus.
The New Testament Gospels further reveal that Jesus was always on
the side of the poor and the oppressed. He stood with the minority.
I suspect that Jesus would have been a card carrying member of the
ACLU and the Americans United for Separation of Church and State.
I think Jesus would approve of the 10 amendments (Bill of Rights)
of the U.S. Constitution.
As for the 10 Commandments, Jesus was hardly impressed as he constantly
re-interpreted and humanized them. He spoke: "You have heard
it said of old, but I SAY UNTO YOU..."
Anyway Bob, I wish for you and yours a peaceful Christmas and a
prosperous New Year! SHALOM!
